Carousell – 2nd Largest Ecommerce Marketplace in Singapore

1600141029123

Carousell Singapore is the 2nd largest E-commerce marketplace in the world and is backed by Telenor Group, Rakuten Ventures, Sequoia India, and Naspers.

With a traditional mindset, the Asian boomers usually don’t use secondhand goods. It’s considered a cultural taboo wherein used items bring bad luck. But in the present day, secondhand goods are now seen as aesthetic vintage items wherein millennials find joy in them.

Moreover, in a survey conducted by Carousell, 76% of their respondents answered that monetary benefits are their main motivation to buy and sell secondhand items.

With lockdown enforced on areas, shoppers spend more time online shopping and selling their own belongings. Carousell became the perfect platform to do it.

As customers try to save money and earn more money during the pandemic, Singaporeans made more than one million transactions on Carousell. An average Singaporean made SGD2,200 by selling on the platform. Asian consumers in the platform resold gifts in brand new conditions.

Out With The New Categories

Women’s fashion and electronics always have been the most popular categories on any eCommerce marketplaces. But the worldwide lockdown has made baking and furniture equipment for DIY gyms and home office popular categories in the world.

Many consumers found what they’re looking for on Carousell due to its appeal and target demographic on board. The platform attracts businesses to sell under them.

Caring Carousell Community

Amid the fear and the threat of panic-buying during the lockdown, a lot of acts of kindness emerged wherein users sell handcrafted items to raise donations to those in need.

Panic-buying caused a massive spike in the prices of face masks, alcohols, sanitisers, tissues, and other cleaning materials in the market. Carousell eventually became the place to buy hygiene goods because a lot of opportunistic sellers used the platform as a way to sell the products at a higher price.

D38 | B2C Ecommerce Marketplaces FT IMGPhoto Credits: Park Grand Paddington London

Ecommerce has greatly progressed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Check out what are the B2C eCommerce Marketplaces in Singapore that massively ramp up and fell during the pandemic period.

According to new research, e-commerce business experts have taken growth for granted at the expense of consumer experience despite the booming sales accelerated due to COVID-19.

In Singapore, more than a third of consumers (39%) states that they are not satisfied with their digital commerce experience.

International Commercial Director of Blackbox Research Yashan Cama said that a study has confirmed a drastic change in consumer behaviour in the past months due to the growing stipulation to shop online.

Singapore’s B2c Ecommerce Marketplace

It was discovered that Singaporean consumers reported a spike in online spending due to COVID-19, with 63% of those who were asked to answer the survey are now spending more online.

Although there are findings that suggest while major e-commerce brands enjoy higher usage rates, the growth resulted in greater examination from its consumers.

For example, 52% of Singaporeans use Shopee, 41% use Qoo10 and 39% uses Lazada, the consumer satisfaction with Qoo10 and Lazada falls on the lower rank, while Shopee performance is on average.

Qoo10 has the cheapest prices in Singapore’s four biggest e-commerce platforms, it has the lowest prices for 35 out of 73 items analysed in the study. Their prices were also usually about 10.97% low-priced than the average.

It was followed by Amazon, with 30 items that have an average of 4.55% cheaper than the usual. On the contrary, Singapore’s most popular e-commerce site Lazada is 15.97% posher than the average for the categories analysed.

How to Start Cross-Border Selling on Shopify

feature

Technology enabled e-commerce to push through cross-border selling and completely transformed the way people buy stuff. Millions of purchases are made online every day regardless of where they are sourced and a large number of products are delivered to end consumers across the globe.

What is Cross-Border Selling?

Selling cross-border helps you reach consumers anywhere in the world by creating localised shopping experiences for your store visitors. Selling in several marketplaces can be an effective key to drive extra income for your business and create brand awareness on a global market.

Digital 38 | Cross-Border Selling Shopify FAQs

Benefits of Cross-border E-commerce

Selling online is no longer the realm of a selected class of e-commerce giants and brand manufacturers. As the technology continues to innovate, this enables small to medium online sellers and street-side businesses to go global and sell across the border effortlessly.

Not only online sellers will benefit from cross-border selling, but also e-commerce platforms such as Shopify.

How to Start Selling Cross-Border?

It is important that you identify your potential target markets before you start selling internationally. You can identify your potential target audience by looking at the size of the market, the simplicity of doing business in that market, and the potential return on investment. You should remember that localising the customer experience is key to driving traffic, and ultimately conversions.

Digital 38 | Cross-Border Selling Shopify FAQs

You should also provide your customers with an option to shop in their local language and currency to build their trust that can lead to higher sales.

It is important that you check with your shipping providers to find out what countries they ship to and which market regulates and limits your products. This way you can adjust shipping regions and comply with the regulations of the receiving market accordingly.

Why Australia Businesses Should Export to Singapore After China Ban

why australia businesses should export to Singapore digital 38

With China’s latest ban on Australian food product imports due to contamination, businesses based in Australia can consider doing export to Singapore to expand market and grow sales.

According to a South China Morning Post report, China has banned imports of Australian barley, sugar, coal, copper, log timber, lobsters and wine. Customs inspections claimed to have found contamination in food products such as barley and log timber. As such, all food imports are banned and these products are facing blocks at Chinese ports.

Officials also  contended that Australian wine is being sold at cheaper prices (dumped) at China than in their home market. Hence, they have imposed taxes of up to 212% on Australian wine. Australia has rejected allegations of wine being dumped in China and this new tariff will make Australian wine unviable and unmarketable in China.

The impact of the China ban on Australian export

China is Australia’s largest export market for barley and wine. 70% of Australian barley and 39% of wine are exported to China.

Without China as a main market for Australia’s barley and wine, Australia will need to find other export markets for its products. If not, many exporters of these food products will go out of business. The whole industry, be it businesses or ordinary people whose livelihood are dependent on this, will be affected.

If you are based in Australia and are looking at exporting your products to other markets, you can consider bringing your products to Singapore. But why you should consider doing export to Singapore? Here are some reasons to persuade you.

Consider export to Singapore with strategic e-commerce

Singapore is one of the few countries in Asia where it is relatively easy to set up a business. The city-state island has a highly efficient infrastructure, free market economy, a stable socio-political environment, and an attractive tax regime for setting up your company. New companies can also enjoy low corporate tax rates of about 4.25% up to $100K profits.

Aside from this, it is the optimum time for you to export to Singapore as the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) pact was signed recently in November 2020. With the RCEP, businesses in the ASEAN region need only follow a single set of rules and enjoy a more fuss-free procedure when exporting to other markets – for instance, from Australia to Singapore.

Are you an Australian-based business looking at exporting to Singapore? Let Digital 38 provide you with cross-border e-commerce, as well as build an e-commerce website that drives sales from across the ASEAN borders. Talk to us to get started.

RCEP Benefits for Cross-Border E-commerce & Export

Digital 38 | RCEP Benefits for Cross-Border E-commerce & Export

The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) is a propositioned pact between the member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and its free trade agreement (FTA) partners. The agreement aims to cover trade in goods and services, intellectual property, and more. Knowing the RCEP benefits can help businesses in Southeast Asia provide better online shopping experience across borders for its consumers.

Additionally, RCEP is the world’s largest free trade agreement in terms of gross domestic product (GDP). It involves 15 member countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand.

What does RCEP mean for SMEs?

The RCEP pact will eliminate tariffs for at least 92% of goods, open up trade in goods and services, and promote investment to help emerging economies catch up with the rest of the world. For small and medium enterprises (SMEs), this means easier cross-border trading and selling between neighbouring Southeast Asian countries.

Why is RCEP significant?

Before the RCEP pact was established, there were multiple FTAs in different countries and each of them has its own set of rules. Exporters had to comply with different set of rules for different countries. It was not only time-consuming, but costly as well. By establishing a common set of rules, businesses only need to follow one set of rules when exporting their products or services.

With simplified customs procedure, improved trade facilitation, lowered transaction time and costs, it gives exporters like you a certainty on cross-border activities for your e-commerce plans.

This pact is especially beneficial to SMEs as the digital economy still presents you with significant barriers for cross-border trade.

How does the pact work for you as an exporter?

With greater ease and more open markets, the RCEP pact will provide exporters like you much needed certainty and stability in times like this. With the right strategy, you can leverage on the RCEP benefits for your growing online business.

Though it will take some time for RCEP to get ratified and come into force as certain parties need to complete domestic procedures, businesses may start preparing as early as now. You can look at your current business model and assess the long-term implications of the pact. By doing so, you can reap the RCEP benefits of a more convenient cross-border trade and selling in the future.

Planning to bring your exports into Singapore and start selling online? Contact us and we will help you get started with your cross-border e-commerce store.
